Content Warnings & Triggers

Especially within the horror community, content warnings and a list of triggers is still a hot topic. Debates rage on because there is one side that believes content warnings and triggers give parts of the story away, or that if you are reading horror (especially extreme horror) a reader should expect the worst. The other side of the coin is the sensativity of one’s limits. While readers of horror are okay with blood and guts, they might not be able to stomach certain violations. They want to be aware of situations before hand, letting them to decide if they want to continue reading.

When I started out, I added basic content warnings on my books. Over time, I realized I never got them all or there was something else I never thought could trigger someone. It became all too daunting to foresee what was a trigger and what was not, so I stopped altogether.

As I move into multiple genres, tackling storylines that could be and might be too provocative for main stream audiences, I decided to created one solid page of content warnings, listed by book. This way, I can added and adjust in real time, if and when a reader catches something I might not have thought was a trigger or missed.
