Adventure was the name of the game for this trip down south. The past three years had been marked by dull staycations filled with relatives and family obligations, hardly qualifying as a true vacation. With the constant chores of cooking, cleaning, and laundry, it felt more like a continuation of daily life rather than a break from work.
Wesley and his buddies, Kek and Shane, decided that a trip to lower Mexico was in order. They had heard fantastic things about a state called Oaxaca, particularly its lake of a hundred islands just outside the city center. In this picturesque area, they anticipated fishing, boating, relishing delicious food, enjoying drinks, and spending time with the opposite sex. Everything they needed for a perfect getaway.
Lush green landscapes, adorned with trees and canals perfect for jet skiing—Wesley had thoroughly researched it. With Kek and Shane on board, come mid-August, they took a flight into Veracruz, Mexico, the closest main hub to the lake. There, they spent their first night.
True to the tradition of any vacation the guys took together, they found themselves in a bar on the first night, indulging in more drinks than necessary to achieve a good buzz. Kek generously bought rounds of tequila shots for everyone at the bar.
To the locals, they were the typical “rich Americans,” although the bar was filled with them. Luckily, their hotel was within walking distance, situated right on the beach, surrounded by typical tourist shops offering beach hats, sunglasses, and shirts as souvenirs. While most of these shops were closed for the evening, the main street still hosted late-night restaurants and pubs.
Outside each of them were men enticing them to enter, all stating the same thing in different variations. “Amigo. My friend. You come inside. Pretty ladies and cheap drinks. Come on, amigo!”
