Chapter 5
Sweat beaded over Avery’s forehead as she pushed through the throng of baseball fans waiting to enter the ballpark. On game days, it was best to avoid the area, but Paisley insisted they hit up their favorite Mexican restaurant, Los Tres Hermanos. It was a celebration dinner for grabbing the paid internship at the art gallery. While she appreciated her friend’s enthusiasm, another night would have been less stressful as she threaded her way between cars, avoiding the many pedestrians headed for a night of fun.
She took one last breath of exhaust fumes before she pushed through the door to the family-owned restaurant she’d grown to love since living on the north side of Velvet City. It was worth navigating the delicate balance between the waitresses’ broken English and her unsettling Spanish to savor the exquisite flavors of the city’s finest Latin cuisine.
The brisk conditioned air was a welcome respite to the afternoon heat of the city. Despite fall approaching, summer still put up a good fight. And after their beautiful, warm day, the asphalt paved surfaces turned the city into an oven until the sun went down, exacerbating the situation. Paisley must have been watching the door because, once it closed, she waved from the back of the room, decorated in a festive Mexican motif to please the American patrons.
Arriving at the booth, Avery found relief at the sight of her usual fishbowl margarita waiting for her. She tossed her bag on the bench and slid in next to it. “Oh, my God. You are the best!”
“I ordered already. I hope you don’t mind. Chicken chimichanga with refried beans, instead of charro,” Paisley said.
Without hesitation, she drew a satisfying gulp of ice-cold drink that was heavy on the tequila; just how she liked it. Right after, she took another sip and felt the tequila doing its magic. “You know me so well. This is perfect. Thanks!”
