We're back to current day... and Alyssa remembers the past all too well.

CURRENT DAY

Alyssa stood on the balcony of her condo, which overlooked the beach. She forgot how much she loved the sounds of the waves coming into the shore. The memory flooded back to the day she left Chicago to return to Florida. It wasn’t where she wanted to be, but here she was.

When she returned that time, she went to therapy as requested. It only lasted about two months before she quit again. A middle-aged woman living under the watch of her parents didn’t help the rehabilitation.

Nothing did.

Doctors said it would take at least six months to see major changes in her psyche from the drugs. When there was nothing but emptiness after those six long months, she stopped taking them.

It never helped.

No amount of medicine could change what happened to her as a child.

No amount of therapy could erase the memories of her childhood.

Deep inside her, the horrors sat dormant until they awoke. Sometimes it was months. Once, it had been an entire year the beast stayed asleep until something aroused it. It was those moments when she took a razor to her fillet her skin in an attempt to rid the dirt and filth of her past from her body.

Another thought crossed her mind while gazing out from the balcony of her beachside condo. Rachel.

The woman intrigued her. Excited her. Confused her. Scared her, even.

That was an emotion. One she had never experienced before, but it was something other than nothing. Yet, she had no control over it. Something else consumed her, dropping her back into those memories. Rachel had looked at her, just as others had in the past, with salacious thoughts—a hunger of sorts—of undressing her and doing things to her body.

Pretty girl. Beautiful angel.

Rivera’s unforgettable voice rang in her ear.

Alyssa lifted her shirt to see the history of her life. To see how many times she heard his voice saying how beautiful she was and how much he loved her.

He was close. The beast knocked on her door, wanting to eat her from the inside out.

It was time.

Alyssa stepped inside the condo and closed the door and drapes. She went to the kitchen to find the one object that could send the monster back into its hole. She took off her shirt and placed the sharp silver blade of the knife against her skin. Just as she was about to pull her wrist across her chest, her cell phone rang.

She placed the knife on the counter and went to the phone without a hurry bone in her body.

The caller notification read: Joanne.
