Later that evening, Arianta picked up the house phone and dialed Shannon's number. After a few minutes of chatting, she finally mustered the courage to share her concerns. “Shannon, I don't know how to tell Katherine that I might want to quit. It's not what I thought it would be. I'm typing on a manual typewriter, and every change requires me to start over from the beginning. It's ridiculous!”

“That's insane. You can't be expected to work like that in this day and age,” Shannon replied sympathetically.

“It's not just that. There's no internet or cell service. We went into town today, and I saw missing persons signs everywhere. One of the girls on the poster looked like someone I think Katherine hooked up with the other night. When I asked her about it, she denied it. And I'm pretty sure she's hitting on me, too.”

“Hitting on you? What do you mean?”

“I don't know, she's just… she's really hot, and she's been giving me all these looks.” Arianta glanced down the hall and around the corner, watching for prying ears.

“Does that mean you’ll end your dry spell?”

“No,” Arianta declared to Shannon, but she wasn't entirely sure if it was the truth. “Hell, no! I mean, she takes the whole cannibalism thing a bit too seriously. She makes these snide remarks every now and then.”

Shannon chuckled. “You mean she takes eating a woman a little too literally?”

“Exactly.” Arianta laughed along with her friend. “Anyway, I gotta go. I just wanted to check in. I'll let you know if I'm coming back early or not.”

“Alright, love. Don’t let her use you as a rawhide.”

“Fuck you, Shannon. Bye.” She chuckled to herself as she hung the receiver back on its cradle.
