The finale...
Life sucked at the moment for Rachel. When she was gone for too long and missed paying rent on time, her landlord changed the locks. As illegal as it was, she had no fight left in her spirit. Instead, she had been staying at her mother’s house, where she couldn’t get out of bed long enough to care about anything—including work.
She had been kidnapped, beaten, shot at, and kicked to the curb in less than a month. The last thing on her mind was returning to work alone. She couldn’t look Joanne in the eye, nor could she face the ridicule from her daughter-in-law, who’d be there.
When the phone rang, Rachel glanced at the caller ID. It read: MY LOVE. It hadn’t crossed her mind to have deleted it because she never thought she’d see that name come across her screen again.
Anger spewed from her mouth as she answered the phone, “Seriously? You’re fucking calling me now, after a month. How dare you leave me after everything we have been through and then call me a month later like nothing happened?”
“Will you marry me?” Alyssa said as soon as Rachel stopped yelling. There was silence. She was in shock, not expecting that to come out of nowhere. It was like a punch in the gut. Alyssa spoke again. “There are times when you don’t get to choose your family. Then there are times when you do. I chose you, Rachel. I know I’m not complete without you.”
“Then why did you stay in Miami? I needed you,” Rachel said.
“As much as we needed each other, others needed me more.”
Rachel furrowed her brow, though Alyssa couldn’t see her puzzled expression. “What do you mean?”
“Tell me you still love me.”
“Of course, you idiot. I love you more than anything. That’s why I’m mad at you.”
“Then I’ll be coming home soon.”
