New Year's Eve... and fireworks for both Rachel and Alyssa.

Chapter 9

CURRENT DAY

It was the first time that Rachel would spend New Year’s Eve alone. She had plenty of good ones, some okay ones, and the horrible one, but she was always with someone. Even when on the floor, drugged, and in pain, Byron was oddly there. Separated from husband number two and her kids with their own families, she looked like she would be her own company.

Then she thought about Alyssa, the fireworks, and the beach. How nice it would be if they could share time outside of work; yet, she didn’t have her phone number to call and join her.

The beach was not far away. In twenty minutes tops, she could be there. With plenty of public parking around, she could take her beach chair, find a spot, and people-watch until the lights went down, then she could wait for midnight to celebrate alone.

And fight the traffic home?

She declined to entertain the idea after weighing the cons.

Laundry?

She turned on her favorite music station, giving the volume an uptick. It was nice to not have to worry about someone else complaining about her weird musical tastes. A little pop music got her body moving.

Clean?

She threw a load of clothes in the wash, pulled out her duster, and gave the house a good sweep. Start the new year with a clean house? She could live with that.

“And we’re dreaming under the same moon, under the same stars. I close my eyes wishin’ I’m gonna see you soon.” Her singing stopped.

Alyssa entered her thoughts. They were under the same moon. The same stars. She’d see the same fireworks. They’d talk about it when they came back to work. That’s when she decided she needed a change of plans.
