It took about an hour for Child Protective Services to arrive, and with Officer Ortega’s help, they quietly removed the girl from the police station in Miami. The caseworker explained to the young girl that they were helping her by taking her on a long road trip to Orlando.

The girl said nothing.

Rivera didn’t allow her to speak, only to answer his questions. Even in the dark bedroom, no one spoke. Those who did had to live with the gray tape on their mouth until Rio ripped it off. It made her bedmates scream when that happened. This only made Rio hit them—slap them across the face.

The girl didn’t want her mouth covered. She stayed quiet.

Once on the road, Alexandra Karunna, the CPS caseworker, let the young girl know she could sleep. It would be safe to close her eyes and rest. Within twenty minutes, the teen was asleep in the backseat covered with a warm flannel blanket.

On arrival, they carried the sleeping girl into the CPS detention center in Orlando, where she had a private room with a comfortable bed. An armed guard protected the room, though the armed part was not visible to the young sleeping lady.

Including the four-hour drive to Orlando, she slept about fifteen hours. When she woke, she did not know where she was. There was a man with her in the room. This had happened once before. Rio placed her in a car, where the motion caused her to drift off to sleep. That time, when she woke, a tall and tan man rose from his chair and walked to the bed toward her.
